Dedication
This page is dedicated to my father, who never stopped believing in me. Thank you for planting the seed of entrepreneurship in me and nurturing it. For giving me the gift of dreams and the ability to realize them.
You taught us that life is like a cup of tea – it’s all in how you make it. For inspiring not just our family but many others to enjoy life with a good cuppa, for supporting the tea industry of Sri Lanka… your memory lives on.
You are a legend. You are my hero and you will always be omnipresent in our hearts. A little bit about the Wickremesooriya family and their association with the tea industry… Mr. J D S Wickremesooriya, my great grandfather, was one of the pioneer Transport Agents in the Dimbulla District, Sri Lanka. My grandfather Lionel and his elder brother Francis took over the business in the late 1930s.
My grandfather was a renowned and successful businessman and well known among the tea industry in Talawakelle. He handled building contracts, owned agencies for oil and gas supplies and was a principal shareholder of the Madyama Lanka Bus Company. The family business was involved in tea transportation as well as the supply of cash for monthly estate labour wages. Lionel was also responsible for storing and distributing food supplies to estate workers during World War II.
For the services Lionel extended to the Plantation community, he was appointed an honorary member of the Three Planters Clubs (Dimbulla Athletic and Cricket Club, Talawakelle Tennis Club and Agras Club). The family were devoted Buddhists and dedicated their time and resources towards development of the village and community.
Born to a family of Tea connoisseurs, my father Jagath Wickremesooriya moved to Colombo for his education and then pursued his interests by joining Mackwoods as a Tea Taster in the late 1950s. Subsequently, Jagath followed his passion and created a successful travel and transportation business. Destiny brought him to the US where he was able to re-connect with his love for tea and the desire to support the plantation industry in Sri Lanka. Jagath imported a range of high-quality Ceylon teas under that brand name ‘Baily’ which was well received by stores in the US. Following the demise of my beloved father, we are relaunching Baily in his memory and dedicating this page to him for making every effort to support the tea industry in Sri Lanka.
Thaththi (Dad), with every pack of tea we sell and every sip of tea we take, we fondly remember you.
A share of Baily sales will be dedicated to support underprivileged children in Sri Lanka.
History of Ceylon Tea
In 1867, an Englishman, James Taylor marked the birth of the tea industry in Ceylon by starting a tea plantation in Loolecondera estate in Kandy in 1867. He began the tea plantation on an estate of just 19 acres.
In 1872 he started a fully equipped tea factory in the same estate and that year the first sale of Loolecondra tea was made in Kandy. In 1873, the first shipment of Ceylon tea, a consignment of some 23 lbs arrived in London.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the famous Sherlock Holmes detective series, remarked on the establishment of the tea plantations, “…the tea fields of Ceylon are as true a monument to courage as is the lion at Waterloo”.
A century later, today, Ceylon Tea is a global product of the finest, purest tea across the world!
Why Baily Tea?
Over the years as tea became a popular drink, many suppliers in Europe were to blend superior Ceylon Tea with tea leaves from other countries in order to reduce costs. Whilst this brought the overall quality of tea down, these are now seen on the supermarkets’ shelves without the distinct flavour which only Ceylon Tea can offer.
At Baily Tea, we pack only Pure Ceylon Tea which is completely unadulterated and is shipped straight from Ceylon’s tea factories into your cup!
The Lion symbol on the Baily Tea pack is an authenticity of this process which indicates that it holds only Pure Ceylon Tea – the finest tea in the world!
